Building on this heritage, we are now expanding our feature animation division (Digic Animation), currently developing high-profile projects such as the animated film series based on Magic: The Gathering for Netflix.
The Role
As the 2D DMP Lead, you are the master of the "big picture." You lead the Digital Matte Painting team in creating the expansive, stylized backgrounds and environments that define the scale of our stories. You will be responsible for translating painterly concept art into seamless, production-ready 2D and 2.5D matte paintings, ensuring that every horizon and skybox perfectly matches the production’s aesthetic and integrates flawlessly with our 3D elements.
Responsibilities
- Artistic Leadership: Establish and maintain the "Gold Standard" for digital matte painting within the Environment unit, ensuring all work aligns with the project’s stylized, painterly vision.
- Unit Supervision: Oversee the daily output of the DMP team, providing clear artistic and technical feedback to ensure backgrounds are visually stunning and production-ready.
- Technique Mastery: Lead the creation of complex 2D and 2,5D matte paintings, utilizing advanced digital painting and compositing techniques to achieve high-end cinematic results.
- Integration Excellence: Partner with the Environment Supervisor and Lighting Lead to ensure that DMP assets integrate seamlessly into the 3D pipeline and support the narrative lighting of each shot.
- Workflow Optimization: Refine the 2D DMP pipeline, ensuring efficient use of resolution, layers, and project organization for smooth hand-offs to the Compositing department.
- Mentorship: Provide professional coaching to the team, fostering expertise in perspective, color theory, and the specific stylized aesthetics required by DIGIC.
Essential skills
- Expert DMP Mastery: Specialist-level proficiency in digital matte painting, with a portfolio demonstrating a world-class "painterly" style.
- Software Fluency: Expert knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and a strong understanding of how DMP assets are utilized in Nuke or Maya.
- Traditional Foundation: A strong background in traditional painting principles, including light, color, atmospheric perspective, and architectural form.
- Leadership Experience: Proven ability to lead a team and manage complex background deliveries within tight production schedules.
