Job Title: Environments Supervisor Department: Digital Studio Reports to: Digital Artist Manager Status: Non-exempt Classification: Full Time Date: Immediately
Purpose of the job
The Environments Supervisor oversees the creation of our digital environments. You will report to the Visual Effects Supervisor and Digital Supervisor and are responsible for establishing the look of the environments in the film in accordance with the VFX and DFX supervisors’ creative direction, while maintaining high-quality standards. The Environments Supervisor works with the Environments/Generalist team to establish a best practice workflow for efficient Environment creation, including render testing, optimizing, and publishing environments to the pipeline for shot propagation. You will be working closely with other department supervisors to ensure clear delivery of all work between departments and will be working hand in hand with production to define delivery schedules and milestones. The Environment Supervisors will be responsible for the artistic and technical quality of the output from their team and delegating work effectively.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Create full 3D environments and set extensions using artistic and technical skills from multiple
disciplines
- Generate textures and shading networks for large scale environment and their assets
- Hard surface modeling and UVing using various reference materials
- Sculpting and terrain generation
- Create photorealistic CG lighting and Look Development that meets high technical and aesthetic
standards. Houdini/Redshift experience is a bonus.
- Contribute creatively to the overall aesthetic in a shot or sequence.
- Work in a collaborative manner in a team
- Strong time management skills
- Experience in 3D environment creation and its workflow is preferable
- Experience in working within a world-scale environment as opposed to single shots is
preferable
Education, Experience and Skills Required
- 3+ years experience with large scale environments work in a high-end feature film/episodic
pipeline required, live-action/VFX experience preferred
- A basic ability to work within Nuke
- Proficient with both Maya or Houdini
- Highly proficient with at least 2 of the following: layout, model, texture, lookdev, lighting
- Must have excellent communication and organizational skills
- BONUS:
- Thorough understanding of a 2.5D (projection) pipeline is a plus
- Previous experience in Matte Painting is a big plus
- Experience using ZBrush, Mari, SpeedTree, Substance, Photoshop, Gaea, and Terragen are
advantageous
- Experience as an Environment Supervisor, with proven capability in managing and delivering
complex Environment requirements
- 10+ years experience within VFX feature films, a thorough understanding of the VFX pipeline
- Proven team leader with strong motivational qualities
- Strong communication skills
- High-level knowledge of relevant VFX packages and software
- Thorough understanding of 3D and 2.5D VFX processes and production pipelines
- Strong working knowledge of a range of VFX industry software, including Maya, Mari and Nuke.
- High-level experience modelling, texturing, layout, lighting and digital matte painting
- Good understanding of compositing
- Experience developing concept art into photo-real environments
- Experience with procedural city/terrain generation and scattering tools an advantage
- Experience working with shoot data including photographic and reference data, HDRIs,
photogrammetry and Lidar
- Strong knowledge and understanding of the natural world (geology, geography and

The posted range describes the minimum to maximum range for this job description in the provinces of British Columbia. The range is posted in accordance with applicable law. The range for this same position may be lower or higher in the provinces of British Columbia.
