Lighting Technical Director - ILM Vancouver
Position Summary
Industrial Light & Magic is looking for a Lighting Technical Director (TD) to join our extraordinary team! The Lighting TD is responsible for producing high-quality lighting, shading and rendering of complex shots for high-end photo-realistic visual effects films and feature animations. With initial direction and mentorship from their Supervisors, they identify and match the colour and directions of all light sources in the real-world scene to the reference and plates for replication in CG. Their primary task is to produce beautiful and seamless lighting for many shots across multiple sequences while maintaining visual consistency and quality throughout. A passion for excellence, humility and the drive to constantly improve are key to the success of a Lighting TD.

What You’ll Do
- Design and build the lighting and look of computer generated objects and scenes
- Assemble the final CG scene, light and render sophisticated shots
- Create light rigs and work within established set ups
- Create efficient rendering set-ups in order to optimize render farm output
- Override and adjust materials when appropriate to address shot specific notes
- Demonstrate solid presentation skills in dailies or rounds by clearly and briefly outlining what has been accomplished and what remains to be addressed in the shot. Asks good questions to confirm clear understanding of the notes and required approach
- Stay on schedule, maintaining the highest standards for quality of work, while ensuring consistent communication with Production. Quickly alerts team to any delays to their tasks or if support is needed
What We’re Looking For
- At least 3 years relevant professional VFX/Feature Animation experience and at least a college level diploma in computer graphics, fine arts, design, or photography, or related field; OR, at least 5 years VFX experience in lieu of education
- Experience in both VFX and Feature Animation is highly preferred
- Experience with Katana preferred; Houdini, Maya or similar experience is beneficial
- Renderman experience preferred; Arnold, Vray or other renderers applies
- Good understanding of how to troubleshooting render noise, artifacts and other pipeline issues
- Prioritizes tasks and manages time very well. Provides the team with accurate time estimates on shot task completion
- Excellent communication skills with Production, Supervisors and other departments
- Comfortable giving and receiving feedback in a constructive and uplifting manner
- Linux knowledge and scripting ability in Lua and/or Python preferred
- Nuke compositing ability
