Purpose of the job
The Lookdev Lead is responsible for establishing the workflows, templates, and methodologies as well as curating materials used by the Lookdev artists on their team. They work closely with the Head of Assets and the Asset Supervisors to oversee the Lookdev artists within the Assets Department ensuring the work is done on time and to the high level of quality we expect at DD. Lastly, they help troubleshoot, maintain, and improve the lookdev pipeline by working with their Supervisors and pipeline TDs. Overall, the Lookdev Lead is an integral part of the Asset Department that helps guide and define the aesthetic and technical operations required to achieve the highest quality assets possible.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Define the overall direction of the materials on all assets they oversee, working closely with the Assets
Supervisors and the Lookdev team
- Author templates and set best practices for shows as they get started
- Assess, troubleshoot, and optimize artist work and help ensure clean and efficient renders
- Help maintain a high level of quality and aesthetic standards for all projects
- Complete tasks within tight production deadlines while being largely self-directed
- Troubleshoot rendering and technical issues and work with the pipeline team to address issues
- Work closely with the model, texture, and groom teams to define the workflow between disciplines
- Ability to create realistic materials for a wide range of assets, from characters to hard-surface
- Participates as a team member in determining various design and technical solutions; provides
feedback to other team members of the production
Qualifications: Education and/or Experience Required
- Strong eye for detail and understanding of how to translate real-world surface properties into efficient
shaders
- Strong Maya, Houdini, Solaris, and Linux skillsets and a versatile knowledge of one or more major
rendering packages are essential. Ideally V-Ray experience as well
- 6+ years of experience creating photorealistic shading for live action feature films
- Experience leading a team of artists or other relevant management background
- Python or C++ experience in production is a plus, but strong technical and troubleshooting skills are
critical
- Mari, Substance and Unreal experience is ideal
- Extensive experience in a wide range of shading techniques and technical methods
- Experience with neutralizing reference imagery as well as a basic understanding of ACES color
pipelines
- Ability to troubleshoot, debug, and optimize technical issues, workflows, and renders
- Must have excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to write OSL shaders a plus
- Must be able to work in a collaborative environment, and take direction from Supervisors

- Hours for this position are based on normal working hours but will require extra hours pending
production needs

The posted range describes the minimum to maximum range for this job description in the state of California and the provinces of British Columbia and Quebec. The range is posted in accordance with applicable law. The range for this same position may be lower or higher in markets outside of California or the provinces of British Columbia and Quebec. Offered base pay is contingent on internal equity, as well as the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other factors.
