Purpose of the job
The Model Lead is responsible for establishing the workflows, templates, and methodologies as well as curating materials used by the model artists on their team. They work closely with the Head of Assets and the Asset Supervisors to oversee the Model artists within the Assets Department ensuring the work is done on time and to the high level of quality we expect at DD. Lastly, they help troubleshoot, maintain, and improve the Model pipeline by working with their Supervisors and pipeline TDs. Overall, the Model Lead is an integral part of the Asset Department that helps guide and define the aesthetic and technical operations required to achieve the highest quality assets possible.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities
- Define the overall direction of the materials on all assets they oversee, working closely
with the Assets Supervisors and the Modeling team
- Author templates and set best practices for shows as they get started
- Assess, troubleshoot, and optimize artist work and help ensure clean and efficient
renders
- Help maintain a high level of quality and aesthetic standards for all projects
- Complete tasks within tight production deadlines while being largely self-directed
- Troubleshoot rendering and technical issues and work with the pipeline team to address
issues
- Work closely with the lookdev, texture, rigging and groom teams to define the workflow
between disciplines
- Ability to create realistic models for a wide range of assets, from characters to hard-
surface
- Participates as a team member in determining various design and technical solutions;
provides feedback to other team members of the production.
- Be able to provide guidance and mentorship to other modelers
Education and/or Experience Required
- 3+ years of experience creating high resolution, photorealistic models for feature films in
Maya
- 2+ years of experience Leading a team of artists
- Experience with character, organic, hard surface vehicles, props, and/or environments
modeling
- Experience working from 2D reference as well as cyberscan and motion capture data
- Zbrush and Mudbox experience is preferred
- Photorealistic texture painting and lighting experience is a plus
- Must have excellent communication and organizational skills
Working Conditions and Environment/Physical Demands
- Office working environment.
- Hours for this position are based on normal working hours but will require extra hours
pending production needs.
- Walking/bending/sitting.

The posted range describes the minimum to maximum range for this job description in the state of California and the provinces of British Columbia and Quebec. The range is posted in accordance with applicable law. The range for this same position may be lower or higher in markets outside of California or the provinces of British Columbia and Quebec. Offered base pay is contingent on internal equity, as well as the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other factors.
