Job Description
The On-Set VFX Supervisor plays a critical role in bridging production and post-production by ensuring that all visual effects elements are captured correctly during filming. This role works closely with the Director, Cinematographer, Production team, and the VFX studio to ensure that the required data, plates, and elements are properly captured for seamless integration during post-production.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Director, Cinematographer, and Production teams to plan and execute VFX shots during principal photography.
- Provide technical and creative guidance on visual effects requirements, workflows, and on-set methodologies.
- Supervise the on-set acquisition of VFX elements, ensuring that all required data and references are captured accurately for post-production.
- Oversee the filming of VFX-related elements such as green/blue screen setups, tracking markers, reference passes, HDRI captures, lens data, and practical effects.
- Work closely with camera, lighting, and art departments to ensure setups align with VFX integration requirements.
- Ensure proper capture of plates, clean passes, witness cameras, reference photography, and environment data needed for compositing and CGI integration.
- Communicate continuously with the post-production VFX team to maintain alignment on shot requirements and technical specifications.
- Identify potential issues during filming and provide practical solutions on set to avoid costly fixes in post-production.
- Maintain detailed documentation and ensure all VFX shot data and metadata are properly logged and delivered to the VFX production team.
Requirements
- Extensive experience in the Visual Effects industry, with a strong understanding of VFX pipelines, workflows, and production methodologies.
- Proven experience working as an On-Set VFX Supervisor or in a senior VFX supervisory role.
- Strong knowledge of on-set VFX data acquisition, plate photography, tracking workflows, and camera systems.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills to coordinate effectively with directors, cinematographers, production teams, and VFX artists.
- Strong problem-solving ability with a proactive approach to handling on-set challenges.
- High attention to detail with a focus on delivering production-ready VFX elements for post-production.
- Ability to work in fast-paced production environments with evolving creative and technical requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on large-scale VFX productions, including action sequences, CG environments, or creature animation.
- Knowledge of camera tracking, photogrammetry, HDRI capture, LiDAR scanning, and virtual production workflows.
- Background in cinematography, animation, compositing, or VFX production is an added advantage.
