Senior Technical Compositing Artist
We’re excited to be back in our Montreal studio Tuesday thru Thursday… come join us! This role focuses on generating integrated panoramic visuals for immersive VR environments, dome displays, and expansive virtual backgrounds. The artist is proficient in handling latlong formats, delivering high-quality composites that preserve visual integrity throughout the entire 360° spherical field. Under the general supervision of the Lighting & Compositing Supervisors, this position will help Lead artists with all aspects of Compositing. They will be executing high-end Nuke effects, assisting with 3D Compositing set-ups, overseeing sequence continuity passes, and helping the team with general Nuke guidance.
Responsibilities
Panoramic & Immersive Compositing:
- Execute high-end panoramic composites utilizing LatLong projection formats.
- Seamlessly integrate matte paintings, VFX, and animation assets within immersive spherical fields.
- Ensure visual integrity across the wrap boundary to maintain a flawless 360° environment.
- Leverage specialized spherical projection techniques to eliminate element distortion.
- Utilize VR headsets for technical QC to resolve parallax errors and visible seams.
Technical Compositing, Tools & Pipeline:
- Develop advanced 3D Compositing set-ups in Nuke for virtual environment extensions.
- Performing advanced compositing operations with the rendered layers created, including overall look and feel, color correction, 3D set-ups, advanced rotoscoping, look development, and other more specialized compositing effects, as needed.
- Manage complex CG renders, including multi-channel EXR files, Cryptomattes, and various AOVs.
- Create custom Nuke gizmos and Python-based tools to optimize specialized immersive workflows.
- Perform technical optimization on high-resolution Nuke scripts ranging from 6k to 12k.
- Review environment & key shot Nuke scripts of the Light/Compositors.
Collaboration, Lighting & Workflow Management:
- Partner with the Director, VFX Supervisor, Lighting Supervisor and other staff in order to understand mood, time of day and color of the composition.
- Partner with Lighting, Environments, and CG departments to sustain sequence continuity.
- Works in partnership with the Lighting & VFX Supervisors to maintain and/or improve look quality and sustain pipeline stability across multiple shows.
- Light production shots as required by the Lighting schedule.
- Perform technical work in support of shot Lighting using a variety of tools.
- Itemize and help to identify what tasks are more Compositing specific vs Lighting specific, helping to manage & execute sequence continuity passes.
- Offers up ideas early on in shot production for Compositing effects to heighten or fix a problem in the final look of a shot or sequence. (Flares, Projections, Comp FX particles, etc.)
- Offers additional perspectives on techniques to final shots quicker, cheaper and of high quality.
Qualifications
- Degree/diploma in fine arts or equivalent experience
- Minimum of 8 years of experience as a Lighting and Compositing Artist
- Thorough knowledge of high-end 3D software, Katana Knowledge of Nuke and Arnold software is an asset
- Strong demonstration of composition, lighting and color
- Strong artistic skills
- Demonstrable ability to communicate creative and technical thoughts and ideas
