Visual Development Apprentice
The Visual Development Apprentice closely partners with the Art Director and Lead Visual Development Artist(s) to explore options for the look and appeal of environments, backgrounds, and props. This is a union covered position.
Sony Pictures Animation is an animation studio based in Los Angeles, California, creating both feature animation and animated series with artists from around the world. We pride ourselves on empowering filmmakers to lead the creative process and allowing the hand of the artist to be truly felt, with the goal of producing bold and innovative visual storytelling.
Responsibilities:
- Concept, design, and or develop locations, sets, layouts, moments, and props for the project based on the director's vision
- Explore, conceptualize, and design a variety of stylizations, looks, and visual directions
- Ideate and discover artistic expressions to enhance concepts and designs
- Fully engage in all training activities and classes
- Collaborate with and address notes from a Mentor/Supervising Artist in the completion of all assignments
- Proactively engage and collaborate with the Art Department
- Attend and contribute to all Art Department Meetings
Qualifications:
- Outstanding research skills and an understanding of environment design and world-building
- Drawings or paintings that demonstrate a strong understanding of perspective, color, composition, texture, and lighting
- Knowledge of current tech/software used in production for color – such as a Cintiq and Photoshop
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Time-management ability to meet real deadlines
- Exposure to the art of animation through an independent or collaborative film project(s) helpful
- Positive attitude with the ability to be flexible!
