Role Overview

The Digital Matte Painting (DMP) Lead is responsible for leading the matte painting team in creating high-quality digital environments, set extensions, and photorealistic backgrounds for film, television, and streaming productions. This role involves supervising artists, maintaining artistic consistency, and ensuring that matte painting work aligns with the project’s creative vision and production timelines.

The DMP Lead will collaborate closely with VFX Supervisors, Environment teams, and Compositing departments to deliver visually compelling and technically accurate environment shots.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise the Digital Matte Painting team, ensuring high-quality environment work across projects.
• Review and approve matte paintings, projections, and environment assets before final delivery.
• Create and guide the development of photorealistic matte paintings, set extensions, landscapes, and digital environments.
• Interpret concept art, storyboards, and references to produce high-quality environment visuals.
• Work closely with VFX Supervisors and Compositing teams to ensure seamless shot integration.
• Provide creative and technical guidance to DMP artists throughout the production process.
• Ensure work is delivered within project schedules and quality standards.
• Participate in dailies, internal reviews, and client sessions to address feedback and implement required changes.
• Maintain pipeline efficiency and best practices within the matte painting workflow.
• Mentor and support junior and mid-level matte painters to help improve team performance.
• Provide artistic direction and mentorship to the DMP team.
• Ensure consistency in visual quality across sequences and shots.
• Coordinate with Modeling, Lighting, FX, and Compositing departments for smooth pipeline integration.
• Support production in planning resources and managing shot complexity.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience in Digital Matte Painting within the VFX industry.
• Strong portfolio demonstrating photorealistic matte paintings and environment work.
• Deep understanding of camera projection workflows, composition, lighting, perspective, scale, color theory, and atmospheric effects.
• Extensive experience in environment creation, set extensions, and large-scale landscapes.
• Strong ability to interpret creative briefs and translate them into high-quality visuals.
• Proven leadership experience in supervising artists and managing shot deliveries.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced production environment with tight deadlines.
