Overview
We are looking for talented Digital Matte Paint (DMP) Artists to create high-quality matte paintings, set extensions, and environment enhancements for VFX projects. The ideal candidate should possess strong artistic skills, technical expertise in shot integration, and the ability to create photorealistic or stylized environments that seamlessly blend with live-action and CG elements.
This role requires a strong understanding of composition, perspective, lighting, color, and realism, along with the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced production environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Create high-quality digital matte paintings, environment extensions, and background replacements for VFX shots.
- Develop photorealistic or stylized environments based on project requirements and creative direction.
- Integrate matte paintings into shots while maintaining accurate lighting, perspective, scale, color, and atmospheric depth.
- Work with live-action plates, still photography, 3D renders, and CG assets to create seamless final imagery.
- Perform camera projection / camera mapping for complex shots when required.
- Create detailed textures, landscapes, skies, architecture, and environment elements.
- Ensure matte paintings align with the art direction and visual style of the project.
- Collaborate with Compositing, Lighting, CG, and Production teams to ensure smooth shot execution.
- Implement feedback and revisions from Supervisors / Art Directors efficiently.
- Manage shot priorities and deliver tasks within production deadlines.
- Maintain organized project files and follow pipeline standards.
- Support team collaboration and contribute to problem-solving for complex creative and technical challenges.
Requirements
- 4–8 years of experience in Digital Matte Painting / Environment Art within VFX, animation, or a related industry.
- Strong proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and matte painting workflows.
- Excellent understanding of: Composition, Perspective, Color theory, Lighting & shadows & Atmospheric depth.
- Strong experience in photo manipulation, photobashing, paint-over, and set extension workflows.
- Good knowledge of camera projection / 2.5D workflows.
- Familiarity with Nuke, Maya, Blender, or other 3D software is a plus.
- Ability to create production-ready matte paintings and complex environment designs.
- Strong eye for realism, detailing, mood, and visual storytelling.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail.
- Good communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines efficiently.
- Proactive mindset with ownership of tasks from initiation to closure.
- Leadership or mentoring capability is an added advantage.
